How it works
As a cold front clears, the barometer climbs and a sealed overcast breaks into moving cumulus with clean, rain-washed air behind it. Low sun through those gaps fires god-rays and lights the broken cloud from beneath, the dramatic skies that follow bad weather. The rising pressure is the tell that the front is leaving; exactly where and when the deck breaks is the part no forecast can promise, so go and watch the western sky.
