STORM / DRAMA

Lenticular Clouds

Strong steady wind across the ridge, moist air aloft.

How it works

Strong, steady wind flowing over a mountain or ridge stacks smooth, lens-shaped clouds that hang in place like flying saucers. You need steady wind at the right speed and enough moisture aloft for the cloud to form.

What to check in the field

This is a Watch look: the ingredients are forecastable, but whether the wind is truly perpendicular to the ridge — a point forecast cannot see the terrain interaction. Shotcast flags it so you know to go and look.
